In view of the accession of the EU to the European Convention of Human Rights envisaged by the Lisbon Treaty it would perhaps indeed be wise to create a (sort of) “watchdog” on the level of the Commission that is able to draw attention to current or imminent violations of fundamental rights in the EU. On the other hand i seriously wonder if not the tasks that would be covered by such a new commissioner are already sufficiently covered by the current commissioners. If indeed the work-load of the justice, freedom and security commissioner is to heavy – as suggested in the post on EU Observer – then an increase in the available resources for this commissioner would – in my view – be the more obvious solution.
