Already in 2006 the United Nations General Assembly declared the year 2009 the International Year of Reconciliation. The motivation behind the UNGA’s action was the recognition “that reconciliation processes are particularly necessary and urgent in countries of the world which had suffered or were suffering, situations of conflict that had affected and divided societies in their various facets”. An invitation to participate in actions in support of the International Year of Reconciliation can be found here. An action plan under the theme “The Millennium Challenge – “Human Reconciliation”, is available here. More general information is available on the website of Global Balance.
2009 will also mark the International Year of Natural Fibres. What is the purpose behind this? “To raise awareness of natural fibres, to promote efficiency and sustainability of the natural fibres, and to foster an effective international partnership among the various natural fibres industries.” More information is available on the special website www.naturalfibres2009.org and on the website of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Finally, 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy. This “is a global effort initiated by the International Astronomical Union and UNESCO to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe through the day- and night-time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery.” The official trailer video for the IYA2009 is this weeks “Clip of the Week”.
