MOSCOW, May 18 – . Russia hopes that the International Criminal Court will assess all of the NATO bombardments in Libya that resulted in civilian casualties, Foreign Ministry Commissioner for Human Rights and Democracy Konstantin Dolgov said on Friday.
He added that Russia has closely studied Human Rights Watchs report, “Unacknowledged Deaths: Civilian Casualties in NATOs Air Campaign in Libya,” which sheds light on the civilian losses during the armed conflict in Libya.
Mass protests began in Libya in mid-February 2011 and soon escalated into armed clashes.
The opposition National Transitional Council was declared the only legitimate power in the country. On March 17, 2011, the UN Security Council sanctioned military intervention in Libya to allegedly protect civilians from Muammar Kaddafi’s efforts to suppress the opposition.
NATO led an air campaign against Kaddafi, who had ruled the country for more than 40 years.
Kaddafi was later captured and killed.
The NATO operation n Libya ended on October 31, 2011.
