Max Planck Encyclopedia of Public International Law

In early September, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (in co-operation with Oxford University Press) launched the new edition of the Max Planck Encyclopedia of Public International Law (MPEPIL). It is an updated, comprehensive work covering the central and essential topics in international law. The project was initiated in 2004 under the auspices of Professor Dr. Rüdiger Wolfrum, Director of the Max Planck Institute and constitutes a new edition of the so-called Encyclopedia of Public International Law, which was published under the general editorship of Professor Dr. Rudolf Bernhardt between 1991 and 2001.

The online version consists – at the moment – of over 450 articles on a variety of different international law related topics. In the online version, the different contributions are listed both alphabetically, by subject and by authors. Keywords that are used within the individual texts are linked to the respective contributions, which makes it a swift and convenient tool in every research on international law related subjects. A full list of all articles, about 1700 (!), that will eventually be available in the MPEPIL can be seen here. The online version will be updated continuously until 2010. After this date a print version will also be available.

The online version requires a subscription, which should be available in most law libraries. Information on how to sign up can be obtained here. A number of sample articles are, however, also available.
