“Does the ICC target Africa?” This is the title of an interesting and timely opinion piece by Justice Richard Goldstone, former Chief Prosecutor of the ICTY and ICTR featured in the latest edition of the International Bar Association’s (IBA) e-magazine for lawyers, EQ: Equality of Arms Review. Justice Goldstone’s insightful critique of the African Union’s response to the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant against Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir is a welcome addition to the ongoing discourse on this issue in the international legal community.
EQ, a quarterly publication, is designed to provoke discussion and debate on developments at the ICC. It seeks to increase awareness of the Court’s work amongst lawyers and bar associations across the globe. The publication is produced under the umbrella of the IBA-ICC Monitoring and Outreach Programme, a project supported by the John D and Catherine T MacArthur foundation, aimed at closely monitoring the Court’s activities and encouraging the legal community to get engaged with ICC issues.
The 2nd Edition of EQ is a special “Africa Issue” focusing on various aspects of the ICC’s relationship with the continent. In addition to the piece by Justice Goldstone, the magazine also features articles chronicling the impact of the ICC in Kenya and South Africa, as well as a thought-provoking opinion piece on Zimbabwe by IBA Executive Director Mark Ellis.
