250 corporate executives express their commitment to human rights

250 corporate executives have on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights publicly expressed their commitment to ‘respect and support’ human rights.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we, business leaders from all corners of the world, call on governments to implement fully their human rights obligations. We also reiterate our own commitment to respect and support human rights within our sphere of influence. Human rights are universal and are an important business concern all over the globe.

Although this and similar public statements are welcome, it remains unclear what is the normative value of such statements. It follows from above statement that governments have ‘human rights obligations’ whereas corporations have ‘only’ ‘commitment to respect and support human rights within our sphere of influence.’ It is likely that the public statement was carefully drafted and would be therefore interesting to read what the drafters meant by including such a phrase and whether they refer to human rights obligations in national systems, at the international level or both.
