International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

Today, 29th of May, is the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers which is aimed at paying tribute to the men and women who have served or are still serving in United Nations peacekeeping operations. The UN peacekeeping missions, currently 17 different ones stationed all over the world, have been in the media quite a bit in recent times. In part because they have once again been the target of violent attacks inter alia in Darfur; but also due to the question of wrongdoing of or even crimes committed by individual peacekeepers. UN Dispatch has an interesting post on this issue – which first and foremost raises the question of how and where to prosecute possible violations committed by UN peacekeepers – with some references to a recent article in the New York Times by the deputy chief investigator with the United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Services in Congo.
